HUGE ENEMY SHIPPING LOSSES
257,000 Tons In A Month
LONDON, February 18. In just over four weeks German and Italian shipping losses have amounted to the huge total of 257.000 tons. These figures are given in an Admiralty statement today which says that since January 7 the Germans have lost 73,000 tons, and the Italians 173,000 tons. The balance is made up of enemy-controlled neutral shipping and brings the total of enemy ships sunk, scuttled, or captured to 257.000 tons.
These figures are one more convincing proof of the stranglehold of the British naval blockade on the enemy. Since the war began the naval broom has swept over 2,000,000 tons of German and Italian shipping from the sea. As usual, the Admiralty preserves a discreet silence on how and where these enemy ships were destroyed, but some of the latest successes arc mentioned in an Admiralty communique.
