WANTED TO GO TO PITCAIRN
Conscientious Objector A man who described his religious denomination as Calathiimpian appealed on eonseieutions grounds before the No. 4 Armed Forces Appeal Board in Wellington yesterday. He "as Jack Forniby, boot repairer, Petoue, who said he bad been commanded by his Creator not to take human life and had already done his share against Hitler, Germany and Fascism by not dealing with Italian or German goods a year before war began. To Mr. C. O. Bell. Crown representative, appellant said that his religious belief was Calatbiimpian. He prayed regularly. Did Mr. Bell'.' .Mr. Bell: I mu Quest ion ing you. Forniby said he had wanted to. go to Pitcairn Island anil had writtc.i two letters I here, but without getting any reply. He believed Iho authori ties knew war was coining and opened tlie letters. When they found he wanted to leave New Zealand it was a ease of "whist, into the lire" with the letter.-, lx; said, indicating an imaginary tire in the board room. Asked how long he had held his views, appellant said he could not remember. lie was not fond of dales; he took a dislike to them at school. Forniby said lie doubted if a Nazi victory would make conditions worse. He did not know but that Nazi conditions were being created in New Zealand. "1 know that to the last minute British financial interests were supplying war material to Germany." Th? chairman, Mr. Stilwell, S.M.: We will let you have our decision at 2.15 p.m. Appellant still had the last word, remarking as be left the room. "I'm really a prisoner in New Zealand now. ' The appeal was dismissed.
