SALVAGE OF WASTE PAPER

Work By Schools Begins

PERIODICAL CALLS ON ALL

HOUSEHOLDERS

Collection of household waste paper by school children began in Wellington this week. Already a ton of paper, valued at about £7, bus been received at the depot from one school alone. All proceeds will go to patriotic funds. The deputy-chairman of the metropolitan committee lor the reclamation of waste material, Mr. A. R. Christian, said yesterday that the schools, masters and pupils, bad started enthusiastically and were doing .a good aud thorough job. They would call at all households at regular intervals. If anyone desired to get rid of paper quickly, he should send a messenger to the nearest school, and it would be collected immediately.

Newspapers, books and periodicals of every kind were required. It was important that the paper should De clean aud, when possible, it should be tied up in bundles. It was hoped to arrange for carriers in each district to collect the paper from the schools aud take it, as a voluntary service, to the depot at the old Customhouse Street end of Bond Street. Carriers had given this free service in the collection of metals. The collection of paper from business premises bad been in progress for three or four weeks, said Mr. Christian, and the result was satisfactory. Tu many large buildings there were voluntary organizers, responsible for gathering paper within the buildings. More such organizers were required. It was Itoped that after such preliminary collection the paper would be sent, free to the depot. This had been done so far. In many cases it was economically unsound to pay for collection.

“It is important, that cleaners should help the war effort by keeping clean paper separate from sweepings,” Mr. Christian said.
