Cillas Wins For Indian Owner NOTES AND COMMENTS Auckland Stakes Increased (By The Watcjieb.) Cillas, winner of the Vercoe Handicap on the second day of the Waikato meeting. is racing here while awaiting shipment to India, and in his present form he might win again before he leaves. Cillas stays remarkably well lor a eolt who is by a horse that was purely a sprinter, but there is good staying blood oil both sides of his pedigree. His sire, Diatommis, is- out of the Martian mare Spangle, a full-sister to Marsa. dam of the Melbourne Cup winner. Nightmarch. The owner of Cillas is the Australian A. Higgins, who has been racing and training horses in India for many years. Year after year he lias occupied a prominent place on the list of winning trainers at the important meetings at Calcutta and Bombay, having scored many wins with horses secured in Australia and New Zealand. Among the winners he has secured from the Dominion have been Karapoti. Beremia. Kahapa. Martara, Fils de Vaals. Moorsotis, Meadow and Ben Braggie. Doing Well. Kindergarten continues with sprinting tasks at Ellerslie and is thriving on his work.

Auckland Stakes. An increase of prize money is featured in the programme of the autumn ami winter meetings of the Auckland Racing Club. The Easter Handicap, principal event of the autumn meeting, to be held on April 12 and 14, carries £l5OO, an increase of £250 on last year’s figure. The President’s Handicap has been raised from £450 to £OOO, the H. O. Nolan Handicap from £650 to £750, Huia Handicap from £5OO to £6OO, and Islington Handicap from £4OO to £5OO. For the winter meeting, to be held on June 2, 4 and 7, the Great Northern Hurdles has a stake of £1750, against. £l5OO last year, while the stake for the Great Northern Steeples,

£2OOO, remains the same. The Cornwall Handicap has been raised from £6OO to £750, and the Remucra Hurdles from £5OO to £650. Several other races show an increase of £5O.
