NAPIER HARBOUR
Projected Dredging Work NAPIER, February 18. The cost of completing the dredging o\ Napier Harbour to permit a depth of 35 feet at the berths, and an overall depth of 30 feet, is estimated at £27,800, which includes i’SOOO for an overhaul of the dredge, according to information which was given to the monthly meeting of the Napier Harbour Board by the chairman, Air. T. Al. Geddis. The chairman said this work would be completed in about 11
months- At present there was an overall depth of 26ft. Of the 4S piers required for No. 4 wharf, 34 had been driven, all the piles for the job having been made. Steel for the cargo shed was due about the middle of next month, and the work would be put in hand as soon as possible after its arrival. Air. Geddis said the board did not propose to raise further loan money, and that there seemed to be no reason why the work should not be completed out «»f revenue.
It was suggested by Mr. IL D. Brown that, as it seemed likely that rill the war was over there would not be so many rebels using the port, it would be better that the remainder of the Joan money be used for dredging instead of revenue, and that work on No. 4 wharf be done out of revenue and not out of loan.
Mr. Brown's suggestion was deferred fid the chairman’s return from a visit to \\ < llington. where he is to go into the <;uestion of a Government subsidy. Ii was reported that the revenue for the three months! to December 31 was £J<»,.»O2. against £2;».241 for the corresperiod in 1 !>’?.). and expenditure was £27..i1< (£2.».34.»). The expenditure so far on the breakwater harbour was reported to be £55 ( .640. of which £6993 was spent in December.
