The General Election

Sir, —It seems to me to be utterly unreasonable and unnecessary that this country should be put to rhe heavy expense of a General Election at a time when our Empire is fighting for its very existence. If a fully representative National Government had been appointed at the commencement of the war all this expenditure could have lieeu saved and devoted to winning the war. Surely it is not too late to do this now and show the world that in a time of crisis New Zealand can rise above party polities. Let us follow the splendid example of the Old Country and combine our best brains and resources, irrespective of party, in a national campaign for victory. I don’t know even approximately what a General Election would cost, perhaps some of your readers could give us a rough idea, but I do know that under present circumstances it would be a sinful waste of money, time and effort whicli could be put to far greater use. A National Government need only remain in power till victory in the war is won, when the Labour Party would resume office till such time as a General Election might be held. I think it is just as well that everyone should realize and bear in mind that the only reason an election has to be held during the war is because we have not a National Government. To hold a General Election in wartime surely savours of fiddling while Rome, and perhaps iu this case I should include London, burns.—l am, etc., G. F. MOORE. Busily Park, February 17.
