DEATH OF FOUNDER

Famous Pap worth Scheme (Uy Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright.) LONDON, February 1. Tiie death is announced of Sir Pendrill Varrier-Joues, co-founder and for 22 years director of Papworth Village. He was prominent in the treatment of tuberculosis, and was 57 years of age.

It has been stated that no programme dealing with tuberculosis can nowadays be considered complete without the inclusion of such a scheme of rehabilitation as that adopted so successfully at Papworth. Nor, it is believed, need such a scheme be confined to those suffering from tuberculosis. The experienced gained at Papworth ami Preston Hall, proves the great benefits, both physical and financial, to those who have been employed in the industries at these village settlements. Instead of being a liability to the State the workers in these sheltered industries become an asset, ami as they work their way back to better health become still greater assets till eventually numbers of them can bo returned to full civilian occupations. If the workers at Papworth were in receipt of public assistance they would draw £.17,5(10 annually. Instead of costing this amount and leading dispiriting lives of idleness, they earn £40,000 and pay £2OOO to the Britisli Government by way of health insurance and so on, thus benefiting the whole community by their increased spending power while they themselves win their way back to better health. It is declared that pensions and idleness can never put the sufferer from tuberculosis on his foot. Sir Kingston Fowler says that over the portals of every sanatorium should bo inscribed those words, “Faith and work create vitality,” Faith in the future and carefully graded work according to Hie capacity of each patient will do more toward helping sufferers from tuberculosis than the most perfect scheme of pensions, but one lacking rehabilitation as tin essential, can achieve.
