GENERAL FRANCO AND PETAIN MEET

Little News Available (Received February 14, 7 p.m.) LONDON, February 13. Beyond a short communique stating that "after his return from Italy General Franco met Marshal Petain at Montpellier, in the south of France, where Marshal Petain entertained him at dinner,” little light has been thrown on the meeting. They had a conversation which lasted 80 minutes. After the meeting General Franco left in a procession of 25 cars heavily escorted by police. It was announced in Vichy that during the visit Seuor Suiter, the Spanish Foreign Minister, and Admiral Darlan, French Vice-Premier and Navy Minister, conferred in another roomForeign correspondents in Rome have been forbidden to speculate on the meeting between General Franco and Signor Mussolini, although glamorous accounts of the meeting are given prominence in the Italian newspapers. The Stefani (Italian) news agency adds little to the official comment. It •says that matters discussed included the reorganization of Europe and questions concerning the Mediterranean and Africa, and adds that there was perfect identity of views on these points, but beyond this broad generalization there is no .suggestion of any ’definite action by Spain of the kind the Axis have been urging. Nearly 1900 shelters nightly serve about 200.000 people with food. The shelter population varies, and as the number given does not include tube shelters served by the London Transport Board, the magnitude of the task still to be performed is very great. The Ministry of Food issues equipment on free loan to all authorities in the London area, and has set up a central pool, which includes equipment. on which all authorities can draw
