SUCCESSFUL POTATO CULTURE
Correspondents Have Bumper Crops 11.11.1 V. (M.akani> writes: “.Hist a note to say how much we appreciate your interesting and instructive gardening .notes. This season we carried
out your instructions in planting potatoes' and have met with wonderful success, considering the poor quality of our soil, which after all is only one remove from the parent rock. In addition to the litter, a light sprinkling of Westfield was used followed by three sprinklings of wood ashes when the tubers were developing. The ashes seem to have the effect of keeping the potatoes clean and also improves the texture. The seed used was Government certified Suttons Supreme, and the percentage of small ones dug was 2.5 in weight In appreciation we take pleasure in forwarding you a sample of the larger ones.” [The above correspondent refers to our recommendations regarding the use of composted material and wood ash for potatoes. The specimens he forwarded were all that perfect potatoes should be. Two other correspondents have also expressed pleasure at the results obtained. The formula will be republished next planting season.]
