Floods In Marlborough Dominion Special Service. BLENHEIM. February 14. Though bringing relief to Hie plains area ami the Awatere district, which have liven suffering from a prolonged dry spell, heavy rain yesterday and today caused flooding in the Canvaslown, Jtai Valley and Opouri districts, in the latter of which the main Blenheim-Nel-son highway was blocked between Canvastown and Havelock, and between Canvastown and Jtai Valley, the water reaching a depth of 4ft. Gin. in places. The level subsided quickly, however, am] the road was clear again about noon.
Serious .flooding is reported in the Opouri Valley. A bridge has been washed away at one end and a slip estimated to contain HOOO cubic yards came down on the Ronga Road, carry-
ing part of the road away. Some culverts were washed out and at the moment road communication Io Opouri is completely cut off. Much of I lie land in the valley is under waler, but. Ihe seitiers iiad stillicienl warn ing of the danger and Hie slock had been removed Io safe places. WAIRARAI’A RIVERS RISE Dominion Special Service. MASTERTON, February 11. Light rain began in the Wairarapa yesterday morning, and Hie showers increased till a heavy downpour was falling by evening. Rivers rose in flood, but no serious inundations occurred, and this morning the weather cleared slightly, with a consequent falling in flood 'levels. Later this afternoon ' heavy ruin again set in. and reports | showed that j further rise iu the rivers | was starting. The rainfall up to 9 a.m. today was two inches for the 24 hours.
