Following receipt by the Commonwealth Government of certain cable messages dealing with recent developments in the international situation the Advisory War Council, while it was reviewing the position in Sydney today, adjourned abruptly and summoned the heads of all the fighting services to meet in Sydney tomorrow. Air Chief Marshal Sir Robert Brooke-Popham, Commander - inChief of the Far East Forces, who is at present in Australia, will come from Melbourne for a meeting of the War Cabinet in Sydney tomorrow morning and later will attend a meeting of the \\ ar Advisory Council. The Acting Prime Minister. Mr. Fadden, and the Leader of the Parliamentary Labour Opposition, Mr. Curtin, issued a joint statement tonight in the course of which they said: — "It is the considered opinion of the War Council that the war has moved to a new stage, involving the utmost gravity." In their warning to the people of Australia that the war had entered a phase of the utmost gravity, Mr. Fadden and Mr. Curtin stated that the situation at present was not precisely clear, but it was clear that the people must not delay in or doubt ot the need for the greatest effort that their country had ever made for its safety and independence.
