Once Worn By Admiral Sir Joseph Nias
The uniform once worn by Admiral Sir Joseph Nias, which was a feature of the Navy Departinent'.s exhibit in tlie Government Court at the (.'etitenuial Exhibition. Ims iwxv been added to tlie historical collection at Hie Dominion Museum.
Nias was commander of 11.M.5. Herald, when she brought Hobson to New Zealand as first Lieutenant-Gov-ernor; he Was present at YValtangi. and afterward, at Port Underwood, he proclaimed British sovereignty over the South Island. Tile uniform is actually Hint of a vice-admiral of 100 years ago. It comprises a heavily-braided, bras- Inntoned eoat of navy-blue and gold, eoekeil bat. waistcoat, embroidered shirl. braces, cuffs, belt and sword. There are in all about 50 bright but tons mi the uniform, all of whii-li no doubt bad to be polished by the ad mil',al's man before he lui'iicd out on any I'ornml occasion, The exliibil is in excellent condition, set out in a glass ease and fumigated against tlie attacks of moth or oilier destructive insects.
