A SUMMARY OF THE SITUATION

While important currents are obviously moving below the surface in Europe, speculation takes a larger part than usual in the news, particularly on the Balkan developments. Some aspects, however, are now more clear. The German infiltration into Bulgaria continues briskly. Turkish organs arc openly calling on Bulgaria to make a stand and are warning Germany against entering their own territory. In Bulgaria the opposition to the Governments acceptance of the piesent German moves has at last developed on a much wider scale. It is suggested that Britain and Turkey, as a result of their military talks, are proposing to Yugoslavia a plan for a combined counter-move. Athens radio declares that Fascists in Rome last month attempted to defy Mussolini by requesting peace terms for Italy from Britain, a move which was suppressed by the police lhere is no further news yet of the reported Spanish-French-Axis discussions. The Imperial offensive in East Africa has intensified with a broad advance by South Africans in southern Abyssinia. Inch objective appears to be the Abyssinian capital itself. In Eiitiea the fate of Keren is stated to be now only a matter of time as a result of the capture of important mountain defences. The drive down the Red Sea coast is making good progress. Tension continues in the Far East. While one quartet m Eon* don states the belief that Japan will make a move in concert with Hitler’s expected spring offensive, the High Commissioner in Malaya has given a warning of a possible early emergency. The R.A.F. on Tuesday night revisited many of the targets in north-western Germany which it had attacked the previous night. It also bombed German naval bases and gave particular attention to Ostend. There was little German air activity over Britain, what there was being over east and south-east England.
