COUNTY COUNCIL’S COMPLAINT
Information Not Given By Foxton Harbour Board
Dominion Special Service. PALMERSTON N., February 12. Dissatisfaction with the failure of the Foxton Harbour Board to supply information which had been specifically asked for in November was voiced at a meeting of the Kairanga County Council when it was decided to request the Palmerston North City Council to convene another conference of local 'bodies which are being rated by the harbour board. The information was sought by the council following the receipt of a demand from the board that it should strike and collect a rate because of revenue being insufficient to meet costs. The information' sought comprised particulars of shipping, the number of vessels trading with the port, the total tonnage dealt with, and copies of the board’s balancesheets for the past three financial years. The county clerk, Mr. N. I. Nielsen, reported that altogether four letters had been sent to the board seeking the information, and all that had come to hand so far were copies of balance-sheets, which were left at his office a week ago. Cr. W. G- Shannon mentioned that, according to the published report of the harbour board’s meeting in December, it was stated that all the information sought was being furnished to the council. “It is about time we had another meeting of the local bodies who are be-, ing levied,’ said Cr. M. W. Voss. “The harbour board has had more than n year’s grace since the last meeting and it is time the mutter was resurrected. It looks as if they have something to hide.” On Cr. Voss’s motion, it was decided to make representations to the Palmerston North City Council, which convened the previous meeting of local bodies. The question of making payment of the rate demand was held over till the desired information is furnished.
