OBITUARY

Mr. J. C. Thomson

A well-known Napier citizen. Mr. J. Clark Thomson, has died at the age of 74 years, says a “Dominion” Special Service message. He was born in Hamilton, Scotland, in 1866, and arrived at Napier by the lonic in January, 1897. He began work in the office of Mr. J. Kinross White, with whom he remained for 10 years. After serving a period in the insurance department of the Hawke’ s Bay Farmers' Cooperative .Association, he took over on his own account the land and commission agency business of the late Mr. Montague Lascelles and acted as the Napier agent of the State Fire Office till its branch office was established. He was clerk to the Napier South Town Board till Napier South was taken into the borough. For a period he served as a city councillor, and for 25 years lie was on the committee of the Central School, being chairman for most of the time. Along with the late Mr. R. C. Wright, he pioneered the establishment of a dental clinic for Napier. He was chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board for four years and a half, and member of the high school board of governors, and its representative on tlie technical college board. lie was an active member and a life deacon of the Congregational Church and its treasurer for eight years, and a prominent worker in the cause of temperance. Mr. Thomson was a foundation member of the Wairere Bowling Club and its president in £925-26. His eldest son. John, was killed in action in 1917. He leaves a widow, one son, Mr. Alex Thomson (Napier), and three daughters. Mrs. J. M. McKinnon (Napier), 'Mrs. lan Stuart. (Hamilton), and Miss Agnes C. Thomson (Napier). Mr. Thomas E. Burn The death has occurred in Wellington of Mr. Thomas E. Burn, ;r partner in the engineering firm of Burn and Sons, Petone. Born in Tasmania in 1889, Mr. Burn came, to New Zealand in his boyhood and was educated at the Petone Central School and .the Petone Technical College. He served his apprenticeship under his father, and then went into the firm in partnership with his father and brother, continuing in partnership with his brother after his father’s death. The firm lias a worldwide reputation for some of its products. in his earlier days Mr. Burn was an enthusiast'ie playing member of the Petone Rugby Football Club, and be retained his interest in this and other sports till his death. He was a member of the Wellington Savage Chib, the Wellington Trotting Club, and the Petone Working Men’s Club. He served in the Great War. Mr. Burn Is survived by his widow and three brothers, John, Petone, Robert, Wellington, and William, Nelson. Mr. L. Stein The deatii has occurred of Mr. Leo Stein, aged 59 years, says a Press -Association message from Dannevirke. Mr. Stein was connected with Dannevirke and Southern Hawke’s Bay affairs for 40 years. He had been chairman of the Dannevirke Hospital Board for the past 10 years, and was formerly a member of the borough council. He leaves a widow and three daughters.
