SPECIAL UNIT OF HOME GUARD

Action By Riflemen Advice was received at a m'eeting of the Wellington Rifle Association this week that Major-General K. Young had approved a request by a deputation of riflemen for permission to form a special unit of the Home Guard. Pointing out the extreme urgency of the position. Mr. R. E. Flaws advised all those present to join the unit immediately. There would be no difficulty about joining twice, as men would be released from their present unit to join the new one. After a talk by Major Greenish of the Home Guard, ail those.present signed up. BERHAMPORE PARADE Members of the Berhampore Home Guard unit attended a further parade on the grounds of Wellington South State School last night. Mr. W. Clayton, commander. was in charge. The Mayor of Wellington. Mr. Hislop, inspected the unit and complimented the men on their bearing and drill. He made particular mention of the work of the sergeantmajor. Mr. Hutchinson, in bringing the men up to such a high standard of efficiency. Mr. Hislop said there were at present 4000 members of the Home Guard and the Emergency Precautions Scheme in Wellington. Officers of the unit thanked Mr. Hislop for his attendance. NEWTOWN HOME GUARD The Newtown Home Guard now has 125 guardsmen on ils roll. Parades are held at St. Anne’s School. Green Street, on Thursday, at 7.15 p.m. The instructors' class is at the Newtown Library on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. Training is progressing on systematic lines and a large increase of members is expected.
