Lord Lloyd Dead KEEN ADMINISTRATOR AND LEADER
LONDON, February 5
The death occurred at midnight last night of Lord Lloyd, Secretary of State for the Colonies and Leader of the House of Lords since the appointment of Lord Halifax as Ambassador to the United States.
Lord Lloyd was G 1 years of age. He had been confined to his bed for the past three weeks with a severe chill. He appeared to lie recovering, but recently had a relapse. He succeeded Lord' Halifax on January 10. but his illness prevented him from making an appearance iu the House of Lords. Lord Lloyd was one of the most vital jiersoualities of his age. He was a great administrator, a tireless worker and a man of fearless decisions. He was a keen student of Eastern politics and travelled widely. After leaving Cambridge lie studied Eastern all’air<. tn 1910 lie became a member of Parliament, and was one of the first M.P.’s to join up in Hie last war, serving in Egypt. Mesopotamia and Hedjah. He was mentioned in dispatches six Hines. Lord Lloyd was Governor of Bombay from 1918 to 1923. In 1925 he was appointed High Commissioner for Egypt and Sudan. In 1937 he became chairman of the British council whose objective is the improvement of culture and business relationships with foreign countries, and travelled ex tensively on the council’s behalf.
Lord Lloyd was a keen airman, and at the age of 58 gained his wings. He wrote a number of books.
