Wellington Championships Begin

Flay in the annual championships ot

the Wellington Croquet Association was begun yesterday morning in perfect weather. The mayor of Lower Hutt city, Mr. J. W. Andrews, performed the official opening, and expressed pleasure that so many competitors should be taking part in the tournament, which this year is being held in the Hutt district. Altogether there are 249 entries and the lawns of the Waimarie, Hutt, Woburn, Ngaroma and Central clubs are being used. Handicap doubles were begun as soon as possible, and because of the excellent condition of the lawns were got off much quicker than is usual with this event. The best single of the day was played by Mrs. Toms (Karori) against Mrs. Mathewson (Kelburn). The latter had to concede li bisques to her opponent. At the start of the game neither player could make much he.qdway, and both had clips on third and fourth hoops, when Mrs. Toms, getting the play. made two breaks to rover. With the other ball she also completed breaks, and Mrs. Mathewson had no further chance to score.
