Home Guard Training

Sir, —There lias been, quite recently and quite rightly, a great deal of persuasion evident, calling upon men of all ages to join the Home Guard. Many of us have joined and are keen to prepare ourselves for the possible eventualities which may reach us within a few months, who knows? There is every necessity for speed in the training of the units. That beiug so, can you tell me, .sir, why in Heaven’s name instruction books are so scarce. One bears the complaint everywhere, from officers training for overseas, from territorial officers, and from officers training for the Home Guard. It is surely nothing less than absurd that there should be this shortage of training manuals when so much other published matter is appearing-—the reason cannot be shortage of paper. I am informed that one very important leaflet, of which tens of thousands are likely to be required, was issued in an edition of 600 copies. It is disturbing, not only that the instruction manuals are scarce, but also that the scarcity should have been allowed to develop, and continue for so long. There is inefficiency and stupidity somewhere, and it should be sheeted home and dealt with in a summary manner. —I am, etc., HOME GUARDSMAN. Palmerston N., February 5.
