Assistance
Prayers for divine assistance In the difficulties and perils caused by war were offered at the weekly midday intercessory service at the Wellington Town Hall yesterday. Several hundred citizens, including the mayor, Mr. Hislop, attended, many of them remaining throughout the service, which began at 12.30 and ended at 1.30. while others arrived and left during the service.
The first part of the service was conducted by the Rev. L. A. North, who was assisted by the Rev. J. Russell Grave and Colonel F. AV. Burton, general intercession for the nation and the forces being made. The second part of the service was conducted by Mr. H. S. Hart. Prayers of thanksgiving for Victories and for protection and guidance for the King, the Queen and the Prime Minister, Mr. Churchill, were led by Captain F. W. Moor; for tho commanders of the forces, Britain’s' allies and the United States of America by Mr. Hart; for the men of the forces in all lands and the men of the New Zealand forces in camp, at sea and overseas by Mr. F. C. Perry; and for the parents, wives, friends, bereaved persons and others suffering at home by Mr. J. Snell. Mr. J. Raine led the responsive reading of an extract from the Bible.
The prayers were interspersed with hymns suitable to the occasion, accompanied by the city organist, Mr. C. Collins.
