LAW AND MORALITY IN NORWAY

Seven Bishops Challenge The Nazis (Received February 4, 8.10 p.m.) LONDON, February 4. The Stockholm representative of “The Times” says that seven bishops of Norway have sent a joint letter to Staucke, the Quislingist Minister for Church and Education, asking whether the State acknowledges itself bound by the law of morality contained in the Bible, and also by the Confession on which the Church’s faith is based. Since last April the bishops have frequently instructed the clergy and congregations to respect the law under the belief that they will enjoy full religious freedom according to Hitler’s order, and also the promise of the Nazi Governor, Terboven, that the Courts of Justice would remain independent. The bishops now state that serious doubts have recently arisen as to whether their instructions to the clergy and congregations are still justified, and they therefore ask for a clear statement on the issue.
