Fine Display In Oamaru OPENED BY MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE (By Telegraph—Press Association.) OAMARU, February 1. Tl.e National Flower Show was officially opened by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Barclay, at Oamaru this afternoon, and, according to the opinions of officials of the national organizations, has proved one of the best floral exhibitions ever staged in the Dominion. There were five non-competitive aud six competitive district displays, making a massive show of colourful blooms at their best. The first award for the most comprehensive district display was awarded to the Christchurch aud district exhibit, which was massive in conception with a tiered effect. It contained cut Howers, pot plants, fruit and vegetables of outstanding quality. Otago had a splendid exhibit in which the central motif was u woman with a cornucopia from which flowed the fruit and vegetables of the world on to a lawn. . The Oamaru public gardens exhibit was noteworthy for the brilliance of hanging baskets of begonias. The reserves department, Timaru, and the Department of Agriculture, Horticultural Division, entered praiseworthy shows of flowers and fruit. In the competitive section the first award went to AA’aimute, with 146 points, one point ahead of Timaru, with North Otago third, 124 points. Other splendid stands were shown by the North Otago women’s institutes, the North Otago Women’s Club, and the North Otago Women’s Division of. the Farmers' Union. Outstanding features of the open competitive classes were the success of Mr. E. 11. Taylor (Oamaru), who secured the championship and 15 firsts in gladioli against strong outside competition, and of Mr. C. A. Teseliuer (Gore), who gained 10 firsts in dahlias. The champion dahlia went to Mr. AV. Turvey (Oamaru). Loder Cup Award. The Minister presented the Loder Cup to Major E. 11. Johnson, Raincliff, ►South Canterbury, for his gift of 240 acres of native bush in South Canterbury to the country. Subsequently Major Johnston intimated that ho wished to give an adjoining area of native bush to the country.
