GIFT PARCELS APPEAL

Prompt Response From Brooklyn The first meeting for 19-11 of the Brooklyn Patriotic Committee was held recently, Mr. J. I. Goldsmith presiding. A letter was received from the Wellington Metropolitan Patriotic Committee appealing for gift parcels for soldiers overseas and thanks to the prompt and generous response of the people of Brooklyn the third quota of 400 parcels has already been packed and forwarded to headquarters. Each parcel consists of two khaki handkerchiefs, one packet, of safety razor blades, one tin of coffee and milk, one (in of barley sugar, one packet of boracic powder, one cake of soap in tins, one writing pad and envelopes, one pound of cake in tins. The parcels are of uniform size and packed in cardboard cartons and the cakes are baked in special enamel tins. These will be useful to the men after the cakes are removed. More than 30 letters of appreciation were received from New Zealand men in the Middle East, acknowledging receipt of parcels which they state arrived in good order and are most useful. Sincere thanks were expressed to Mr. Tills for allowing the committee the use of his shop as a receiving depot. It will be open each day from 2 o’clock to 4.30 and suitable gifts for parcels may be left. A bring-and-buy day will also be held the first Friday in each month. Miss Evelyn Goldsmith resigned her position as secretary. Mrs. H. Nicholson was elected in her stead and Mrs. P. MacLachlan was elected treasurer. On the motion of Mrs. Phipps a hearty vote of thanks and appreciation was tendered to Mrs. Goldsmith for making her home available ' for meetings and for her generous hospitality and the capable manner in which she always conducted meetings. The hope was expressed that she would have a pleasant journey to Australia and a safe return. Mrs. Gardiner reported that the following garments were knitted and forwarded to headquarters: 453 pairs mittens, 67 scarves, 66 balaclavas, 8 pairs gloves.
