A SUMMARY OF THE SITUATION
A further series of reverses for the enemy in Africa, in some instances involving deep retreats, have been announced. ’The Imperial forces in Eritrea have struck hard, taking the town of Agordat and another post to the south, and leaving the enemy in Barentu facing the almost certain prospect of destruction or. retreat by a probably difficult route. On the west Abyssinian frontier also the British have made a surprise attack against the main enemy frontier force, setting them in full retreat, and similarly unexpected action on the Kenya front is reported bringing a South African force across the border. A general retreat by the defending advanced units in Italian Somaliland is reported. In Libya the Italians are stated to be retreating on the coast farthei west of Derna, though offering stubborn resistance in the broken terrain. The forces in contact with them are being reinforced. In Albania the enemy are paying more dearly for the failure of their recent counter-attacks, the Greeks having made new important gains in the mountains on the central sector. There was again no air attack on Britain on Sunday night and very little daylight activity by the enemy, though the Royal Air Force on Sunday sent more than 100 fighters to challenge the enemy with some success over their Channel positions, as well as carrying out limited bombing.
