TEPID BATHS

Loan Proposal To Be Deferred WELLINGTON DECISION As the result of a conference with the swimming authorities in •Wellington, as well as from an expression of opinion by councillors, it had been decided to postpone the question of conducting a poll among ratepayers for the erection of tepid baths till the end of the war, said the mayor, Mr. Hislop, at last night’s meeting of the Wellington City Council. The mayor explained that on November 16, 1938, the council bad agreed to take a poll of ratepayers within two years for authority to raise a loan for the construction of tepid baths in the city. Because of the break in council meetings caused by the holidays and of the need for an early decision to facilitate the printing of the roll, councillors had been a'sked to give an expression of opinion. This had shown that the mayor and eight councillors were in favour of postponing the matter and four in favour of a poll being taken. Mr. Hislop added that he had been in contact with the swimming authorities on the matter. A conference with him had recently been held, ahd the swimming representatives had expressed the opinion that the project should be deferred till the end of the war. They asked, however, that the present baths accommodation facilities be improved. Flans of proposed tepid baths were submitted by the swimming representatives, said Mr. Hislop, and it was suggested that these be placed in the hands of the city engineer’s department so that something would be ready when the project was taken up after the war.
