NEWS IN BRIEF

More Garden Seats 'Garden seats placed by the Wellington City Council in reserves and at Oriental Bay have proved popular during the summer. As a result it has been decided to provide further seats at Point Jerniiigham. Fruit For Children.

The executive of rite Automobile Association (Wellington) decided Ihst night to distribute £5O worth of fruit among Wellington childrens homes, instea'd of taking the children for a drive. For many years the association took the children in the homes for a drive annually, but last year, because of the petrol restrictions, the association decided to give the children fruit, and, the consumption of petrol being still restricted, the association decided to do the same this year.

Evans Bay Road. A second treatment of bituminous emulsion is being applied to the widened portions of Evans Bay Road. When this road was widened in 1939, in several places by double its old breadth, to provide an adequate thiffic approach to the Centennial Exhibition, the added strip was lightly sealed to secure a smooth, dustless road. Since then the hammer of fairly heavy traffic has worn that coat of bitumen thin. Now another coat is being administered over the old one, thus building up a fair running surface which should suffice for another two or three years. The new coat also smooths out the join witli the original pavement and makes this drive a pleasure for motorists.

Johnsonville Overbridge. Representations are being made, by the Automobile Association (Wellington) to the Public Works Department for the closing of the bridge over the old railway formation at Johnsonville, which is not used by main road traffic now that a new route has been opened. It is felt that the junction of the bridge approach with the main road would be safer if the bridge were closed.

Example to Dominion. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Holland, has telegraphed as follows to the mayor of the city of Lower Hutt, Mr. Andrews, on the occasion of the proclamation of city status: “Please accept my warmest congratulations on the achievement of a great occasion, and my best wishes for continued expansion. Lower Hutt is indeed an inspiration to the rest of New Zealand.”

Pedestrians on Main Road. The Automobile Association. (Wellington) has received advice from the Makara County Council that the council does not think that the construction of a footpath along the main road at Tawa Flat, which the association has suggested, is warranted at present. At a meeting of the executive of the association last night, the roads committee stated that the work would have been subsidized £1 for £1 by the Main Highways Board, and expressed disappointment at the council’s decision in view of the growth of population'of the district, and the increasing number of pedestrians using the road, specially at night. New Carlton Street.

The holidays slowed down the work on the new Carlton Street at its junction with Sutherland Road. This Is a major work, made necessary by the subsidence of a sandbank between Carlton Road and Queen’s Drive at. Lyall Bay in December, 1939. However, the road is completed in the rough, and is negotiable by motor-cars. The water, drainage and lighting reticulation systems have been attended to, but there is still some excavation work to be done before the road is completed, and it will be some time before the road settles sufficiently to permit paving.

Council’s Congratulations. On the motion of the Mayor, Mr. Hislop, the Wellington City Council decided last night to convey congratulations to the new city of Lower Hutt on attaining tlie status of a city. Mr. Hislop said he felt sure that co-operation ’■would be the underlying principle between the two bodies.
