JUBILEE CARNIVAL

Proceeds For Returned Men’s Clubhouse

LOWER HUTT PROJECT

The mayor of Lower Hutt, Air. Andrews, opened the jubilee carnival on the Recreation Ground, Lower Hutt, last night. Proceeds from the carnival will be transferred to the building fund for the returned soldiers’ clubhouse in Lower Hutt. The president of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, Hr. Perry, M.L.C., recalled how, on Saturday afternoon, he had seen representatives of the glorious youth of New Zealand inarching round Petone grounds. Some people had asked what we were lighting for. We were lighting for these girls and boys, said Mr. Perry. Lower Hutt City, he was sure, would have all the support of the Hutt Valley in such a worthy project as a hall for returned men. As president of the New’ Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, he wished the project every success. The Minister of Finance, Mr. Nash, who is the member for the district, suggested that the hail should be ready for the men who returned from the present war. The estimated cost of the hall was £7000; the £lOOO mark was almost reached, and he wanted all those present to attend the carnival every night during the week aud bring their friends. It was quite correct, continued Mr. Nash, that the Government would support the project despite the many calls on its finances. Mr. Nash congratulated all connected with the hall scheme and the carnival on their initiative, and expressed the hope that the foundation stone of the hall would be laid this year. Though a strong northerly wind blew across the ground, brisk business was done at the stalls and the amusement devices were well patronized. A different programme of entertainments will be presented every night during the week, with interhouse marching displays at the finale on Saturday night. The music last night was played by the Lower Hutt Civic Band, under the conduetorship of Mr. W. L. Richards. FIRST MAYOR OF LOWER HUTT It wuis inadvertently stated by a speaker at the celebrations to mark the elevation of Lower Hutt to city status on Saturday that the first mayor of the borough was Mr. W. G. Foster. The first mayor was in fact Mr. W. A. Fitzherbert, who was elected in 1891 and remained in office till 1898, Mr. Foster succeeding him.
