ALIENS IN DOMINION

Liability For Enrolment The liability for registration on the part of residents of New Zealand who are of alien extraction was referred to on Saturday by the Minister of National Service, Air. Semple. “Any person, regardless of parentage, who was born in New Zealand (or in other part of the British Empire) is a natural born British subject, and is consequently liable.(if otherwise eligible) for enrolment in the First Division of the General Reserve under the National Service Emergency Regulations 1940,” said Air. Semple. “Any such person who has not already registered would be well advised to do so without delay. “Persons of alien race who were not born in a British country but are resident in New Zealand are, of course, members of the General Reserve, but as they are not members of the First Division they are under no immediate obligation to enrol even if they have become naturalized British subjects. “The question of nationality is a complicated one, and it would be impossible for me to deal fully with its ramifications, but if any person of alien extraction is in doubt as to whether he should enrol his best course is to do so. He need have no apprehension that he will be wrongly included in the register of the First Division if he is not eligible, but on the other hand he is definitely liable to severe penalties if he is eligible but does uot enrol.”
