LOWER HUTT BECOMES A CITY

Population Of 1329 in 1891 Rises To 22,000. Now FORECAST OF GREATER EXPANSION Lower Hutt became a city on Saturday after 50 years as a borough and 101 years of settlement. The keynote of speeches at the various gatherings in celebration of the event was not only the unpat alleled development of the Lower Hutt in recent years but also the even greater expansion that lies ahead. The responsibilities of the city s administrators and its citizens generally in the light of this expected expansion were stressed. Lower Hutt was declared a borough on January 1, 1891, with a population of 1329. On January -1, 1941, the Governor-General, Lord Galway, signed the proclamation declaring it a city as from February 1. Its population is now 22,000, coinpat ea with 8000 in 1926.
