CANTERBURY CLUB

Midsummer Handicap To Winning Rival PLEADING’S SUCCESS Dominion Special Service. CHRISTCHURCH, February 1. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting was held in brilliant sunshine, with a good attendance. The track was hard. The totalizator handled £24,3it) 10/-, compared with £22,402 last year. Only Four Starters. There were only four starters for the Middle Park Plate, and Monetary carried nearly four times as many tickets as Pleading and Willow Wood, who were evenly supported. All got away on fairly even terms, with Willow Wood showing out from Pleading and Palfrey as they reached the course proper, with Monetary making his run wide out. Pleading gradually drew to the front in the iuu home, and Monetary still wide out and boring away from his task, threw out a challenge, but though he was straightened up in the last, few strides, he was beaten by a neck by Pleading. Palfrey finished strongly into third place, a length in front of Willow Wood. Pleading won well, and stayed on much better than at Trentham. Monetary owed his defeat to his boring out tactics. Interesting Race. The six starters for the Midsummer Handicap provided an interesting race tor most of the way. Gay Parade rushed to the front shortly after the start, and, with half a mile covered, had a break of six lengths from Sovereign Lady and Settlement. There was no change to the turn into the straight, where Sovereign Lady and Settlement both retired. n inning Rival, responding gamely, drew past Gay Parade, and outstayed him, but only in the last few strides. Wardress was a fair third, three lengths m front of Trench Fight. Sovereign Lady was well clear in last place. Settlement broke down badly two furlongs from home, aud was pulled up. Winning Rival was responsible tor a sterling performance. She went down very short, and though she has run her best races on soft ground, she did not appear to he affected by the firm going on this occasion. Gay Parade ran a creditable race after making the pace throughout. Never in Doubt. . Not Out, favourite for the Craven Plate, carried out his part by always being in front. He led early from Rebel Mate, Doria and Epic, while Skyrena and Good Passage were slow to move off, and Synthetic was squeezed back early to last place. Not Out entered the straight in front of Rebel Mate and Doria, with King’s Toast and Good Passage coming into prominence. Doria was the only one seriously to threaten Not Out, but she was unable to make much impression on him, and he had a very easy win. King's Toast finished brilliantly to get up to 'beat Rebel- Mate on the post for third money, a length in front of Good Passage, with Skyrena, Chary aud The "Wrecker next. Not Out was never in danger of being overhauled., and he was another who improved on his Trentham form. Doria ran one of her usual sound- races, but was no match for Not Ou|: on the day, King s Toast was well back over the first part of the journey, and put in some telling work over the business stages.
