BIG SCRUB FIRE IN STOKES VALLEY
Fight To Keep Flames From Settled Area HUNDREDS OF ACRES ABLAZE One of the most tvitle-spread scrub fires in recent years broke out at Stokes Valley last night and was not brought under control till a late hour this morning. Several hundred acres had been swept by Hie tl.-imes when tin* alarm was sounded al approximately 1.1 pan. Tlie area destroyed is a (tortion of the S. D. Thomson Estaje.. and is on the south-eastern slo]M- of tlie hills encircling the valley. Fori unntely. there are no houses in this area. The Stokes Valley Fire Brigade was quickly on the scene wlie nthe alarnt was given, anti, reinforced by most ot. tile able-botlied men of the valley, did splendid work in confining the fire and checking its drift to Hie built-up area. Armed with chemienl lire ext inguishers. slashers anil ,-txcs. the men sealed they approached the ridges ami threatened to rtlsli down into Hie settled area.
