HOROWHENUA A. & P. SHOW

Record Jersey Entries FINE WEATHER FOR OPENING DAY Dominion Special Service LEVIN, January 31. Perfect weather and a total of more than 1501) entries combined to make the thirty-fifth annual show of the Ilorowheiiua Agricultural and Pastoral Association even more successful titan usual. Today was devoted in the main to the inspection of entries in the competitive classes. The commodious grounds annually used by the association for its shows presented a scene of activity all day. and for those whose interest was not fully retained by the competitive classes several trade displays, side-shows and a programme of ring events provided entertainment. With Horowheuua die centre of a rich dairying industry, it was only to be expected that the dairy classes, notably Jerseys, should be well represented, and the dairy-farmers' response to the appeal for increased butter and cheese production is reflected in the fact that Jersey entries at this show approach the century mark and establish a new breed record for Levin. Ayrshire entries are nearly double those of last year, dairy cattle are the same in number, and the other breeds are also well represented, in quality if not numerically. Tlie cattle exhibits, totalling 246. are 20 in excess of those for last year, but sheep and pigs have declined from 230 and 74 to 196 and 49 respectively. Horses are practically the same at 162. but competitions entries have fallen from 89 to 71. an indication that the farmer is devoting more and more time to the products that have greater use. Tomorrow will be People’s Day. and the concluding day of the show. It is expected that there will be another influx ol farmers from tlie surrounding districts. The attractions will be the conclusion of judging in several classes, another attractive range of ring events, including a parade of prize-winning stock, and Highland Dancing.

Profits from the show are being given by tlie association for patriotic purposes.
