CHRISTMAS BOWLS

Hazlewood And Brighting For Final Game

POST-SECTION PLAY The Christmas fours tournament of the Wellington Bowling Centre was continued yesterday, when two rounds of post-seetion play ami the semifinals were decided in perfect conditions on the Wellington club’s lower green. Mr. F. Spiller, secretary of the centre, controlled the tournament, with Mr. A. Warwick as umpire. The results of rhe day’s play are as follows First Round. Kelburn—Duncan, Wicks, Doherty, Brighting (s.), 25; Newtown—Bird. Collins. Booth, Bastings (s.), 16. This was an unusual game, typical of the ups and downs that occur. in bowls. On the first seven Beads Hastings' rink clapped on 11 points to their opponents’ 3. After that the Newtown rink only scored another 5 points in the' 14 heads, while the Kelburn rink put on 22 points (which included one 5 and two 4's). Second Round. Island Bay—Fanthorpe, Leadsman, Andrews, Bryce (s.), 19: Hataitai —- Wilson, Josephsen, Wrigley. Cometti (s.), 17. Hataitai—Pinnock, Carrad, Bailey, Wellings - (s.), 21; Lyall Bay—Kean, Ilowse, Bradley, Reid (s.), 20. Lyall Bay—Langdon, Raven, Conder, Hazlewood (s.), 22; Wellington—Turner, McKenzie, Christie, Stirling (s.), 11. Kelburn—Duncan. Wicks, Doherty, Brighting (s.), 29: Island Bay—McDonald, Mason, Aldridge, Hale (s.), 14. In this round there were some very close contests.

In' the Bryce—Cometti game (with Andrews skipping instead of Bryce), Cometti was one down on the last head. He was lying two shots and the game, when Andrews with his last bowl drew a lovely toucher and won the game. Another exciting finish was in the Reid —Wellings game. On the twentieth head Wellings scored 4 points, which still left him two to the bad (20-18), but the last head saw the Hataitai men draw in to score another 3 shots —and the game. Stirling’s four were no match for Hazlewood’s, and Brighting’s four was too steadily consistent for Hale’s team. Semifinal. Kelburn (Brighting). 25; Hataitai (Wellings), 11. ’ Hazlewood (Lyall Bay). 22; Bryce Island Bay), 8. There was nothing very exciting in either of these' games, both being won by fairly substantial margins. Brighting’s four was more consistent on the draw than the opposition, with the result that Wellings was asked to drive on half a dozen heads. There was a sensation in the Bryce— Hazlewood game, on the tenth head. Lyall Bay lay three shots when Bryce ■was called on to kill the head. He drove with such force that the jack was shattered. Final Tins Morning. The final game in the tournament will be played between Kelburn (Brighting) and Lyall Bay (Hazlewood) on the Wellington, club’s green, commencing at 9.30 a.m. today. As there are third and fourth prizes to be won, the two losing rinks in yesterdaj’s play. Hataitai (Wellings), and Bryce ( Island Bay), v.ill also-play off at 9.30 a.m. today.
