RETURN OF COLONIES TO FRANCE
British Pledge Stands LONDON, December 27. The Germans continue to spread stories about the British attitude to the future of the French Empire. In London it has been emphatically restated that Britain has not swerved from the pledge given to France some months ago by Mr. Churchill. Among the war aims of Britain and her allies is the restoration of the independence of the colonies of France. The British Government, in conformity with this aim, has granted to the French colonies that h-ave joined the Free French movement the same facilities in matters of trade and finance as are enjoyed by the colonies of the British Empire. These facilities will be extended to any part of the French Empire that is prepared to co-operate with the Allies in their war against Germany. The British Government is firmly resolved that the French colonies shall remain in the hands of a restored France when victory is achieved. It is the view of the British that co-operation between the French and British Empires, both during and after the war, will be of incalcuable benefit to both parties. It is accordingly resolved to do all in its power to tide the French colonies over the present days when their communications with the Mother Country are difficult.
