BATHING FATALITY
Death Of R.A.F. Trainee OFF RANGITIKEI BEACH Dominion Special Service. PALMERSTON N., December 29. A drowning fatality occurred off Rangitikei beach yesterday afternoon, the victim being a trainee at. the R.A.F. station at Ohakea. He is Flying Oflicer John Rowley Miller Stewart, single, aged 24 years. His father is Mr. J. R. M. Stewart. G Graham Street, Eltbaui. It appears that Flying Oflicer Stewart and Squadron Leader Braye and Flying Oflicer de Lange were bathing about 150 yards from the shore when Stewart was noticed to be in difficulties. His- two companions immediately went to his assistance, but. the heavy undercurrent, coupled with Stewart’s struggling, caused them to release their hold of him. Au aeroplane was requisitioned from Ohakea to search for the body and a party was also organized on shore to conduct a search. So far neither has been successful.
