LAWN TENNIS

Christmas Tourney At Miramar FINALS TO BE PLAYED TODAY D. G. France Beaten In Singles A surprise result in the Welliugton Lawn Tennis Association’s Christmas tournament at Miramar was the defeat of D. G. France, last year’s Wellington singles champion, by K. E. Boosey, a young Seatoun club player, not long out of the junior class. The result was C-2, 5-7, 6-3, in the second round of the A grade men’s singles. France was feeling the effect of a heavy cold, but Boosey did play a great game. Another win of merit was that of the young player J. Taylor against a seeded competitor, Pointou. Taylor’s game has developed considerably this season. The finals will be played today when the main attractions will be the A grade men’s singles final, those left in being McKenzie and Boosey. This should start at 1.30 p.m. France and McKenzie entered the final of the A grade men’s doubles by beating Ashley and Kelly, 6-1, 6-8, 6-4, 6-2. The other finalists will be decided by the meeting this morning of Perkins and Roussell with Dr. Entwistle and Sharpe. Entwistle is a well-known Auckland player who has competed at Wimbledon.

Two married couples, France and Mrs. France and Ferkins and Mrs. Ferkins, will play one semi-final of the A grade mixed doubles this morning, winners to play Pointon and Mrs. Kennedy in the afternoon.

There were two unusual winning sequences in the A grade mixed doubles. In the match McKenzie and Miss Castle versus Pointon and Mrs. Kennedy, tlie former pair were leading 4-0 in the deciding set, having at this stage won 11 successive games. Their opponents then won six successive games to take the set 6-4, and the match. The match score was 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.

Despite its own heavy obligations, the association is giving the whole of the net profits for patriotic purposes. Certificates are being awarded In place of trophies and the money thus st»ved added to the tournament proceeds. A dance was held last night for patriotic purposes. There are uo outstanding players from other centres competing. Tilth petrol restrictions and no conflicting tournaments in the district a large entrv was anticipated, but this was not received. The entry of women players was disappointing and there is no A grade women’s singles section.
