Clarion Club Garden Party As a finale to the year’s patriotic effort and social activities, Mr. and Mrs. X. B. Boyd entertained members of the Clarion Club at a garden party in the grounds of their home on tiie Western Hutt hills on Saturday afternoon. Many diversions were offered, and a large number of members of the club and their friends attended. On the lawn, which commanded a wide panorama of the harbour and valley below, tennis and putting were enjoyed, and in a marquee ice cream ami strawbeiries and cream tempted the guests. Gay flower beds and natural bush were charming features of the garden. Afternoon tea was served in the diningroom, where a variety ot flowers from the garden were used in decoration. Club members have been busily engaged during the year forwarding parcels to members serving overseas. R.S.A. Garden Party. The charming grounds of Mrs. W. Kay Brown, Tennyson Avenue, Taita, were the scene, oti Saturday afternoon, of a pleasant garden party in aid of the Returned Soldiers’ Association building fund. Mrs. Brown is the convener for social events held for this objective in the 'Taita and Stokes Valley areas Mr. 0. Ashton, president of the Hutt Valley U.S.A., welcomed the guests and outlined the objective for which the event was held, iuc produce from surrounding gardens sold readily. The weather was perfect for such an event, and the lovely grounds were at their best. Natural bush, giant trees and gay flower-beds all combined in providing a beautiful setting for the stalls, and afternoop tea was served out of doors, on small green tables. A large aviary proved an added interest. Gift Afternoon. There was a large attendance of visitors at the annual gift afternoon for the Anglican Boys’ Home, High Street, Lower Hutt, held at the home on Saturday afternoon, and the large assortment of giflts on the veranda for the carrying on of the home testified to the generosity of the guests. Mr H B Gordon introduced the mayor of Lower Hutt. Mr. J. W. Andrews, who spoke most appreciatively of the splendid work of the matron, Miss Menzies, and steward, Mr. T. Gifford, and declared the atfernoon open. Each year some improvement in the home or the grounds engages the interest of the -niests. This year the recently-installed plant for irrigation aud for providing water for the swimming pool attracted great interest, and the flourishing vegetable garden bore eloquent testimony to the value of this installation during dry spells. The wide, circular tree-shaded lawn in front of the home provided a cool rendezvous for the guests, and cinnerarias formed a bright tapestry beneath the trees. Afternoon tea was served in the refectory, Mrs. A. F. Tosswill being in charge of the arrangements. A cricket match between the Wellington Boys’ Institute, .under Mr. B. A. Alabin, and boys of the home, under Mr. H. Shrubsail, attiacted much Interest. It resulted in a win for the home team. Y.M.C.A. Rainbow Fair. Every colour of the rainbow contributed to the exceedingly effective decorative scheme at the Birch Street Hall, Lower Hutt, on Saturday afternoon, when a very successful ‘’rainbow fair was held. This hall has been used for many months by the Y.M.C.A., and it. is hoped to buy it for a centre lor the work of the association m the Waiwetu, Waterloo and Moera districts. The fair was held in aid of this objective. Mrs. J. IV. Andrews, president of the women’s auxiliary, introduced Mrs. IV. Nash, who opened the fair. Mr. 0. L. Cato, general secretary of the Hutt Valley association, introduced members of the official patty, who included Mrs. Peter Fraser and Mr. H. IV. Kersley, president ot the association, who thanked the .workers for the great amount of effort expended in preparation for the fair. Y.M.C.A. Dance. The last dance of the year was held at the Y.M.C.A. Hall, Cuba Street, Petone, on Saturday night, when there was a good attendance of young people. The decorations were appropriately fes-’ five and there were a number of novelty dances.
