VALUELESS CHEQUES ISSUED

Discharged from Wellington Prison on September 5 last, after serving a sentence of two years for false pretences, Henry Fergusson Lee, labourer, aged 36, started issuing valueless cheques, and within a few days had obtained £93/6/11 in goods and money from unsuspecting shopkeepers. A statement to this effect was made by Detective-Sergeant AV. McLennan in the Magistrates’ Court. Wellington, yesterday, after Lee had admitted 12 charges of false pretences and one of attempted false pretences. “The only thing to do with you is to send you back again,” commented Mr. JStout, S.M., when sentencing accused to 12 months’ jail on each of two charges, the sentences to be cumulative. Detective-Sergeant McLennan added that Lee had been in and out of jail since 1921 and had a long list of previous convictions. Leo had nothing to say.
