Kindergarten Garden Party The grounds of Mrs. Ray Brown, Tennyson Avenue, Taita, provided a charming setting for a garden party held on Saturday afternoon in aid of the Petone Free Kindergarten. In the grounds, which comprise a portion of what were formerly known as “Mason’s Gardens,’’ are giant rhododendendrons and other shrubs and trees Imported by the late Mr. Mason. The guests enjoyed viewing the grounds, the beauty of which was enhanced in the sunshine of the early afternoon. A particularly beautiful feature was a huge pink magnolia tree in full bloom, and the box bordered walks were also reminiscent of the former gardens. Afternoon tea was served on the lawn. The garden party was officially opened by Mrs. J. P. Phillips, a member of the Wellington Free Kindergarten Council, who was introduced by Mrs. Parata Olsen. Mrs. Phillips spoke of the sterling work accomplished by the committee of the Petone Free Kindergarten, and also of the wonderful work accomplished by the kindergartens generally. She concluded by expressing thanks to Mrs. Brown for lending her grounds for the occasion. Mrs. Brown presented Mrs. Phillips with a bouquet, and Mrs. Olsen and Mrs. C. Goldsmith, a vice-president, with sprays. A cake and produce stall, which did excellent business, was supervised by Mesdames R. Goldsmith and V. V. Vinson, and Mesdames R. Brown, C. F. Clements and Stickles ■were in charge of the afternoon tea arrangements. Annual Fancy-Dress Ball. The success which invariably marks social events at the bays characterized the thirteenth annual ball of the Eastbourne Rugby Football Club held at the pavilion, Day’s Bay, on Saturday night. The grotesque and original garb worn by many of the dancers engendered an atmosphere of gaiety and conviviality, the highlight of the evening being the colourful grand march, led by an impressive figure in the person of “DrumMajor” A. Kennedy in a high, feather bonnet and the Macintosh tartan. The judges, Mesdames E. W, Wise, the mayoress, and patron, H. Jowett aiid A. and L. Macklin, awarded prizes to the following: Mrs. R. Houlton, Mr& K. Laurence, Mrs. E. Donaline, Mr. N. Harrison, Miss E. Cheyne, Mr. A. Macklin, and Mr. and Mrs. Hi Sleep. The official party included Mr. E. W. Wise, mayor of Eastbourne, and Mrs. Wise, Mr. and Mrs. Jowett, Mr. and Mrs. A. Macklin, Mr. and Mrs. L. Macklin, Mr. A. Walling, president, and Mrs. Walling, Mr. R. Houlton, social secterary, and Mrs. Houlton, and Mr. and Mrs. E. Turner. '

The social committee members were Mt. and Mrs. K. Lawrence, Mr. and Mrs. R. Lawson, and Mr. and Mrs. M. Barnett; Misses Gwen and Joyce Macklin, Valerie Walling, and Mr. Derek Macklin. A delicious home-made supper was served on occasional tables in the wide veranda. K.S.A. “Diggers’ Night.”

The Returned Soldiers’ Association clubrooms were the scene, on Saturday night, of a cheery social evening at which the “diggers” were hosts. There was a large attendance of “diggers’ ” wives, families and friends, and an excellent programme was interspersed with dancing, for which Mr. G. Page was the master of ceremonies. The items included vocal solos by Mrs. J. Cotter, Mrs. J. Cullotty, Mrs. H. Hodgkinson and Miss Edith Pryde; a vocal trio by Mesdames J. Cullotty, H. Hodgkinson and Miss Pryde, and a vocal duet by Mrs. Cotter and Mrs. C.. Kuigge. Mrs. Noel Taylor was the accompanist. Solo dances were giveu by Jeanette Harris and Judith Watt. The R.S.A. Orchestra, under the conductorship of Mr. Ri Ditmar, supplied the music. Tennis Club Opening. The tennis section of the Hutt Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club was officially opened on Saturday by the president of the club, Mr. M. Upton. Mrs. Upton served the first ball over tho net. Posies made by Mrs. Ivan Jones were presented to Mrs. Upton, Mrs. R. King, president of the croquet section, Mrs. J. W. Andrews and Mrs. W. Hendry, secretary of the croquet section. The committee comprised Messrs. J. Shearer, club captain of the tennis section, Mr. M. Bird, secretary, and Mesdames Ivan Jones, Clark and G. Stevenson. Afternoon tea was served in the pavilion, where the lovely spring flowers from members’ gardens were in the club colours, blue and red.
