SICK AND WOUNDED

Wellington Quota Doubled At a full meeting of the business men's committee of the Sick, Wounded and Distress Fund, presided over by Mr. Charles Todd, it was decided tc regard the drive for funds as closed, but as the work of collection and the results from current art unions were not quite complete the remaining work was left to a sub-committee of four, of which Mr. Todd will continue to act as chairman. It was felt that the last meeting should record the highest day's receipts during the 24 days the committee has been active, £550. Mr. Todd reported that not only had the city's quota of £30,000 been largely exceeded, but that the Wellington province had recorded the particularly satisfactory achievement of subscribing approximately double its quota of £60,000. On behalf of the Wellington Commercial Travellers’ Association, the president, Mr. E. B. Brooking, presented the committee with a cheque for £5300 representing part sales of tickets, in the motor-ear art union and donations received from that body. ■Warm thanks were extended to the large group of collectors, members of rhe Wellington Chamber of Commerce, and to the Rotary Club, with whose honorary and enthusiastic assistance the committee had been able to complete its work in record time. A special tribute was paid to two honorary women helpers, Mesdames I. L. Andrews and V. Toop, who attended to all the clerical duties and the listing of subscriptions received. It was further decided that in view of the success of the appeal, the valuable mural tapestry “Cairo,” presented by Major G. Stamp Taylor, M.C., for the purposes of an art union should be held over for use in any similar appeal made in future.
