Potato Prices Stiffen (From “The Dominion.” June 22, 1915.) General regret is expressed by retailers and wholesalers in New Zealand that theprice of potatoes should have advanced at the present time. With flour selling at £lB/10/- n ton, and oatmeal, sugar, and every other commodity stiffening in price, potatoes, lift till two or three weeks ago, were the only cheap article among the staple foods. Last month good potatoes were selling at £5/10/- a ton (5/6 a cwt.) in the Wellington markets. Today the twice is £S/10/- for South Canterbiivy potatoes in Wellington, hut holders are declining to quote, preferfiug to hold because of the strong demand from Australia. The I’rime Minister. Mr. Massey, has intervened to prevent holders “bulling” the market, by a firmly declared intention of prohibiting any further export if the prices further advance.
