RAILWAY EMPLOYEES
Enlistment In Special Companies Pleasure at the initial response to the appeal for members of the railway service to enlist in the two railway operating companies which are being provided for service overseas was expressed yesterday by the Minister of Railways, Mr. .Sullivan. He said that the first day’s appeal resulted in 9<> offers for service. Already 1100 members of tlie Railways Department had been accepted for service in trie overseas forces. Of these 130 were in the third echelon, and 103 had enlisted but were not yet called up. Tlie Minister, who said that on the railway operating side it wa- necessary to have a large number of qualified engine-drivers ami firemen, made a special appeal to members of the locomotive running branch to respond to their country's call in these days of urgent need. "The welfare ami safety of New Zealand." said Mr. Sullivan, "is linked up with that of Britain and the British Commonwealth of Nations, and I am confident that the locomotive running men will rally to tlie cause and provide the necessary number of enlistments Io ensure the provision of a full quota of trained staff for tin- railway opera I ing eomp.-i nies. I ask for an immediate response from railwaymen, specially locomotive engine-driveis and firemen.”
