FITNESS WARRANTS

V Improved System For Goods Vehicles Au amendment to the Transport Licensing (Goods Service) Regulations which came into operation on March 1, and improvements in the system of issuing certificates of fitness for goods vehicles, were referred to yesterday by the Commissioner of Transport, Mr. G. L. Laurenson. Mr. Laurenson said, iu a statement that there appeared to be some misunderstanding about tlie new procedure and that the contention that the Transport Department would do only half tlie vehicle inspection work while collecting the same fee on an annual basis was quite erroneous. “The change should considerably facilitate the vehicle inspection work, not only by relieving the officers of the necessity of collecting the fees at each inspection, but by enabling all licensed vehicles in each town to be inspected during the same visit, irrespective of the date of payment of fees,” said Mr. Laurenson. “This will also result in a considerable saving in the use of the officers’ cars. "In the case of many operators the change will actually mean a financial saving, as the annual fee will be collected on a vehicle authority basis, and not on the number of vehicles in use. “Further, when a vehicle is replaced or another one is added to the fleet, it will be inspected and issued with a certificate of fitness without, involving the operator in any further cost.”
