Formation Of National Committee

CONFERENCE ARRANGED FOR TODAY

Plans to co-ordinate the national recruiting campaign for the balance of the men required for the Third Echelon of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force and for subsequent reinforcements are to be discussed today at a conference to be attended by delegates from the civil recruiting committees in each of the 12 military areas in the Dominion and by members of the Central Recruiting committee. The Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones, will preside. ■ The conference will be attended by one delegate from each civil area committee and by the following members of the Central Recruiting Committee in addition to the Minister of Defence: The Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser; the Leader of the Legislative Council, Mr. Wilson; the AdjutantGeneral, Colonel O. 11. Mead, D. 5.0.; the assistant Army Secretary, Mr. F. S. B. Dwyer; Major R. Murray, organizer; and Major E. H. Whiting, publicity officer, Headquarters, Central Military District. The delegates who have signified their intention to be present are Mr. K. Usmar, representing the mayor of Auckland; Mr. W. Jones, Whangarei; Mr. F. G. Young; .Mr. F. Caro, Hamilton, and the following members of recruiting committees: Mr. C. Milne (Canterbury), Mr. A. McDonald (Dunedin), Mr. L. Clapham (Hawera), Colonel A. Cowles (Wellington), Mr. E. 11. Dunn (Hawke’s Bay), Mr. O. It. Duke (Nelson-Marlborough), Mr. N. R. Bain (Wanganui), Mr. C. E. Lees (Southland). There will also be present Mr. J. T. Paul, Director of Publicity; Captain C. E. Holmes, publicity officer, Southern Military District; and Captain 11. J. Russell, publicity officer, Northern Military district. Invitations have also been sent to Mr. Hislop, mayor of Wellington; -Mr. McFarlane, mayor of Christchurch; and Mr. Allen, mayor of Dunedin. “The purpose of the conference, said the Minister, “is to form a national recruiting committee, to acquaint recruiting organizations throughout the Dominion with the Government’s plans, and to discuss recruiting generally. The delegates will become members ot the national committee, which will thus be fully representative of the civil committees that have done such splendid work since the call for volunteers was first made in September. With the object of acquainting all members of the conference as fully as possible with the present position, arrangements have been made for addresses by members of Cabinet ou various aspects of the Dominion’s war effort. A comprehensive programme lias been arranged for delegates, including ample time, for a full discussion on recruiting.”
