BREAD DELIVERIES

Zoning Scheme Urged

Dominion Special Service. AUCKLAND, February 10. Proposals for the zoning of bread deliveries, because of the petrol restrictions and the effect on transport, are the subjects of a remit adopted by the Auckland Drivers’ Union. The remit, which will be discussed at the annual conference of the Drivers’ Federation in Wellington next month, suggests that the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Mr. Sullivan, should be requested immediately to inaugurate a scheme of zoning all bread deliveries.

The secretary of the union, Mr. L. G, Matthews, in a statement, said members considered that zoning would not only assist the Government to conserve petrol but would also reduce hours of work and make the five-day week available for drivers. The union understood. Mr. Matthews continued, that the master bakers, along with other branches of the transport industry, had had their petrol supplies reduced considerably. The union believed that, as public opinion was in favour of the restrictions, it would also be in favour of the elimination of bread deliveries one day a week —on Wednesdays. Less than ■lO per cent, of the public in Auckland did not obtain a delivery of bread to their homes on Wednesdays. As a result of zoning, dead mileage would be eliminated.
