PLAY POSTPONED

N.Z. Tennis Semifinals At Miramar WIN FOR MISS WYNNE Only one match was completed on Saturday in the New Zealand lawn tennis championship tournament at Miramar before rain made further play impossible. 1 his was a semifinal of the women’s singles between Miss N. Wynne (Australia) and Miss M. Beverley (Waikato) and was won by Miss Wynne in straight sets. The other semi-final match in this event, between Miss T. Coyne (Australia), and Miss M. Hardcastle (Australia), was left unfinished with the score set all. A start was made with the match between J. Bromwich (Australia), and R. Howe (Wellington), in the semifinals of the men’s singles, the score being 3-all in the first set, when play was postponed. The matches on Saturday’s programme which are still undecided will be played today, and the finals have been postponed till tomorrow. Miss Coyne was always in command of the situation against Miss Beverley. She was more consistent in her stroking than Miss Beverley, and though the latter occasionally beat her with a fast forehand drive. Miss Coyne was usually able to return her best shots with interest. Both were making errors, but Miss Coyne’s all-round excellence and the extra severity of her strokes gave her a comfortable win, Miss Beverley collecting three games in the first set and four in the second. Miss Hardcastle showed her best form of the tournament in her match against Miss Coyne. She began very confidently, hitting well to the corners and forcing Miss Coyne into errors. She ran to a 5-1 lead before Miss Coyne settled down, and though the latter then took two games, the set went to Miss Hardcastle, 6-3. Miss Coyne’s shots were finding their mark more consistently in the second set. She was hitting hard to the sidelines and winning with fast placements. She led 5-2, but Miss Hardcastle, still playing very well, took the next game easily, and survived two set points in the following game to make the score, 5-4. She disputed the tenth game tenaciously and had a chance of evening to 5-5, but lost after three deuces, and the set went to Miss Coyne, 6-4. Bromwich and Howe were still in the settling-down process when their match was suspended, the six games played all going against the server. Detailed results are:—
