TROTTING AT HUTT PARK

Great Jewel’s Centennial Handicap

POPULAR WIN FOR BIWORTHY, (By Overcheck.) The Wellington Trotting Club's Centennial Meeting was opened in beautiful weather yesterday before a large attendance, who thoiuii„hly enjoyed a splendid day's racing. . . Great Jewel continued his winning waj b' i.iptl 11 tlic u li tennial Handicap after being in the lead ' would have not ruined his chance at the start Great task ’ta't been more difficult, but nevertheless he paced a splendid i.. on the running thoroughly deserved to win. , . ponlested as The unhoppled trotters' races were not as Lee ly cos was expected. This was because in both ’ The locnHvtestants failed to maintain an even gait tluoujiciu. - n , in ' d " a trained Bi worthy gave two very even (l isl>lajs lot .. t „ tc ., second which were thoroughly deserved. Pheie was an unfortunate hSuin' in t e Progressive Handicap, Premier falling and causing Bm’SaTs driver ’to fall from his sulky Fortunately neither of the reinsmeu concerned was seriously hurt. roj<rd/m/ Betting on the machine was spirited, the sum ot £24, Jol/.l)/being handled, an increase of £0234/10/- over the corresponding day of last. year.

Consistency Rewarded

Biworthy gave a very smooth exhibition to win the Preliminary Handicap from the outsider Chudic am! Shadeland. The field got away well, Listowel and Biworthy being the early leaders from Paddy's Harvest and Bill Gratton, Premier broke down the back am! was soon in the rear of the field. At the end of six furlongs Biworthy and Listowel were practically on terms followed by Header, Chudic, Reception, Baddy s Harvest, Shadeland, Bill Grattan, Franz Derby, with Premier last. Biworthy and Listowel still had charge down the back from Header and Chudic and with three furlongs to go Biworthy opened up a break of three or four lengths from Listowel who was followed by Header and Chudic. Trotting steadily Biworthy was never seriously challenged in the run home and he won comfortably by three lengths from Chudic who just held off (he fast finishing Shadeland. Listowel, Franz Derby and Reception were next. Paddy’s Harvest looked a likely place filler at the top of the straight, but left his feet. Betty Boop Nicely. The race for the Discovery Handicap developed into a contest between tour horses. Betty Boop, Girl Pat,• Milliard and Sir Echo. M.ulJard went away at a tangle and when the field settled down Betty Boop had charge from Girl Pal, Sir Echo. Crown King and Milliard. At the end of three furlongs Girl Pat ran to the front, from Betty Boop. Milliard and Sir Echo, with Snowy Bingen, some lengths back, at the head of the others, With six furlongs covered the leading four were Girl Pat, Milliard, Betty Boop, and Sir Echo, and they were four of five lengths clear of the nearest of the other competitors. Betty Boop was content to remain in third position till about three furlongs from home when she again ran into the lead. At. the top of the straight she hud an advantage of a length and a half. Girl Pat challenged strongly but failed to get up to Betty Boop. Milliard was some lengths away third. All the Way. Labour Day stood on the mark when the field was. dispatched.in the Hutt Handicap, while Lady Carol was also slow’ away. When the field had sorted itself outi Club King had charge from Royal Thread, Trireme, Television and Allworthy. With a round to go Club King was followed by Television, Royal Thread, Eastern Prince, Trireme and Allworthy. Television ran up to Club King down the back, where Loch Deven also improved his position, but he never : looked a likely prospect. Club King was first to turn for home, just ahead of Television, Royal Thread and Trireme, with Royal Navy handy. Club King stalled off all challenges to win nicely from Television, with Royal Thread and Royal Navy close up. Eastern Prince failed to run on over the final furlong. Warm -Favourite Scores. Pot Luck broke up at the start of the Centennial Handicap and completely ruined his chance. Great Jewel bobbled somewhat qt the start, but was always in front. At the stands the first time Great Jewel was followed by Horse Power, King's Play, Eljitus and Pot Luck, the latter being about a dozen lengths behind the others. Racing down the back Plutus and Pot Luck improved their positions, and whffl the field reached the straight ths former was in third position behind Great Jewel and Horse Power. Plutus did better than Horse Power in the run home, but could not overhaul Great Jewel, who won nicely by about three lengths. Horse Power was third and King's Play fourth. Header Scores Narrowly.

A good start was made in (lie Progressive Handicap, tliougli Bush Laddie was slow striking his correct gait. Premier was the early leader from Header, Bill Grattan, Paddy’s'..- Harvest and Shadeland. Premier brpke on the western bend and lost some ground. At the stand, Header

had charge from Bill Grattan. Premier, Paddy’s Harvest, Shadeland, Bush Laddie (making up ground) and Biworthy. Down the back Header held a substantial lead from Bill Grattan, Premier and Buddy’s Harvest. With a round to go Header was still in front, followed by Paddy's Harvest, Premier, Bill Grattan, Reception, Bush Laddie, Shadeland and Biworthv. Jiremier fell on the eastern be.nd and Bill Grattan’s driver was thrown from his sulky, but he held on to the horse. Four furlongs from home Header was still. showing the way to Paddy’s Harvest, with Biworthy about a dozen lengths further back, and he was followed bv Bush Laddie and A Wrack. Header was first to. turn for home, but had to be driven right out to hold off Biworthy, who finished very resolutely. Violet Wrack was a poor third, and Paddy’s Harvest fourth. Girl Pat Prevails. De Reske endeavoured to win the Wakefield Handicap all the way, but found one just too good in Girl Pat, who was always nicely placed. Lady Denise broke up at the "start, while Crown King was also slow away. At the end of a furlong De Reske was showing the way to Latest Edition, Don Walla and Girl Pal. and with a round to go lj.e still had charge from Girl Pat, Latest Edition, Brungasta and Don Walla. Crucible improved h;s position down the back, but could not sustain his effort. At the turn for home Girl Pat and De Reske had charge from Latest Edition, Toceetie (who broke) and Brungasta. In a good race home Girl Pat won narrowly from De Reske and Brungasta, with Toceetie fourth. An Outsider Scores. In the Pioneer Handicap Four Square, True Guide and Robin Hyde failed to go away correctly. Pursuit taking the lead from Waikari Jack, Burt Scott and Lord Brent. At the end of six furlongs Pursuit was still in front from Waikiri Jack, Burt Scott, Lord Brent and Golden River. Busted Flush, Swift Lady and Rowi improved their positions down the back but failed to get within striking distance of the leaders. As they turned for home, Pursuit still had charge from Waikari Jack and Golden River. Waikari Jack did best in the run home to win by a narrow margin from Golden River. Pursuit was a close third and Burt Scott fourth. Favourite Again Succeeds. The favourite, Loyal Rey, came with a great run in the straight to win the Kia Ora Handicap from two poorly supported horses in Worthy Need, and Tangatu, both of whom finished, well. Battlevale, and Honestus lost ground at the start, the first to show out being Chili Bean from Attain, Jovial, Passport and Loyal Rey. At the end of four furlongs Jovial had charge from Attain and. Chili Bean and with three furlongs to go these three were attended by Worthy Need and Passport, who tangled. As they swung into the straight Jovial iVas just showing out from Chili Bean, Attain, Loyal Rey and Honestus with Worthy Need and Tangatu making up ground. After they straightened up for the run home Loyal Rey challenged and pacing strongly won nicely from Worthy Need and Tangatu, with Honestus fourth. WANGANUI TODAY

Racing Should Be Keen REVIEW OF FIELDS High-class Sprinters For the opening of the Wanganui meeting there arc fields of moderate size but, the racing promises to be keen, lue weather in Wanganui has been hue and the track will be fast. The anganui track is inclined to favour those horses who are smart beginners and who, at least, secure a prominent place in the running. Betting is on the single pool system. The main event, the Wanganui \ U P» for which the good stake of £5OO is ottered, has attracted a field ol rather disappointing class, but over the distance of slightly more than a mile and a ball the race should be full of interest. The other open event, the Flying. Handicap, has attracted some class sprinters and even with Kakahanga out the race is full of interest. Black Thread showed top class form at Trentham at the recent meeting, but will meet some strong opposition from flyers like Ecstatic, Alunga, Homily, Life Guard and Solaria. The following horses may be supported in their engagements: — Westmere Hurdles: Hunting Lore. BisSpringvale Juvenile: Air Flight. Lucky Lulu. Kai Iwi Maiden: Race Away,' Don Quex. r < • Victory Hack, Raana. Pearl of Asia. Wanganui Cup: Siegmund. Play On. or Gay Mimic. Tayforth Hack: Pekoe. Dark Eagle. Petre Hack: Algerian. Judgment. WAIROA MEETING

Prospects For First Day

INTERESTING CUP FIELD

There are good fields for the opening day of the Wairoa Racing Club’s meeting today mid tlie meeting pi-omises to be one of the must successful the club has held. The hack events are very well patronized mid even the open events have attracted horses showing fair recent form. Helling is on I lie single pool system. The principal event of the first day is Hie Wairoa Cup, but a feature of the meeting is tb« number of trophy races. Tliere are three on each day and it is doubtful if there is any other club, of comparable size in the Dominion which is so fortunately situated in this way.

The Wairoa Cup should ' lie a great betting race ns there is a clash of fairly good recent form. The top weight, Happy Lnnding. provides a spigp of interest .of another nature. He was a good performer who broke down about a year ago mid was sold and put to the stud. Hr is now to return to racing and is a class horse in this lield if fit. Many of the others accepted, however, will have tlie edge on him for racing form. Boldstep is n strong possibility on Trentham form if started in this. He has an engagement also in the Ormond Memorial later in the day. In either he would be fancied. Others in the cup with excellent prospects are De Toqnct. Small Boy, Hunting Moments and Morning Flight. Hunting Moments is also in the hack mile , and has excellent prospects in that if started.

In tlie open sprint, file G. C. Ormond Memorial, die best appear to be Endorsement, Boldstep. Proclamation, and Royal Star 11.

Tlie following horses may be supported in their engagements :— Trial Hack' —Native Chief. Charles Hugo. Plenteous.

District Hack—Diana Tetrix, Flying Comedy. Opoho. AVairoa Cup—Boldstep. Small Boy. De Toquet. Te Kupenga Hack —The Ring, Proclamation, Arabic.

Maiilen Stakes —Kintyrs. Hunting Dawn, River Tide. G. C. Ormond Memorial—Endorsement, Royal Star IT. Boldstep (if started ). R.auwa Hack —Hunter's Eve. Mother-in-Daw. Royal Spades. The following is the card :— 12.15 — TRIAL HANDICAP, of £'loo. Six
