“Slack Recruiting”
Sir, —Your correspondent “England” puts my case for me, though I am too old for conscription. I do not think I should be harassed by taxation; it is most inconvenient for me. Also I am glad to hear that you cannot catch a bird by making a grab at it, for I had feared that the tax collector’s grab was going to catch my bird every time. As for things done whole-heartedly being more valuable than things done unwillingly, I state definitely that my heart is not in the payment of the looming Social Security tax. That my income is too small for income tax is poor consolation. We hear a lot about conscription of men and of wealth the latter we already have; I am all for being fair and conscripting both or neither. —I am, etc., IRELAND. Wellington, January 27.
