COLOSSAL GAMBLE

Big German Offensive

(British Official Wireless.)

RUGBY, January 20. Military circles in London consider that a big German offensive in the west would be a colossal gamble. One of the chief unknown factors, it is pointed out, is the weather. It is recognized that if the enemy were to strike a prolonged period of hard weather such an offensive would be perfectly feasible, but that If there were a sudden thaw in the middle of the attack the result might well prove disastrous. The fact that German ships have been driven off the seas increases the difficulties of the German High Command of ascertaining weather prospects, specially in view of the vital importance for forecasting the weather of western Europe and of knowing the conditions prevailing in the Atlantic. Accurate knowledge of weather prospects, specially during the winter months, is certainly an indispensable factor in the formulation of plans for any lightning attack.
