DOMINION BOWLS

Singles Title Won By

G. H. Deare

CONCLUDING STAGES

Fours And Pairs Play

Today In a brilliant game played under perfect weather conditions, G. H. Deare, Carlton, Auckland, won the Dominion Centennial singles bowls championship, 18-15, from JI. J. Squire (Hawera) yesterday afternoon. There was a large and keenly interested audience and Hie Tborndon green, on which Hie final was played, was in wonderful order. Tlie game was closely fought all tlie way, tlie scoring, witli one exception, never being greater than two on end. Contrary to the position in the morning, when he lost his lirst life against Squire and could not make touch, Deare quickly found the strength of the green and by tlie ninth end he was leading 9-3. On the next three ends Squire played superb bowls to score two and even the board. In the tenth Deare lay two and Squire drove to collect the jack and lie shot iu tlie ditch. He then drew a perfect second near tlie edge of the green with his last bowl. Squire forged to the front on Hie “devil’s end” with three perfectly drawn shots, the only three of the match, and another two on the fifteenth made the score 14-11 against Deare. Brilliant Bowls. Thereafter the crack Carlton player, with liis back to the wall and the title slipping from his grasp, reached great heights and from then to the end of the game he scored 2,1, 2,0, 1,1, to win. When the score was 17-15 against him on the last end and with Deare lying shot, Squire still had a chance to trail “kitty” for a three with his last bowl. He missed by the narrowest of margins and took the barren honours.

At the conclusion of Hie final the president of the New Zealand Bowling Council, Mr. JI. J. Casey, congratulated the winner and runner-up on the tine display of singles they had given. Deare received a further round of applause at the Wellington green when he returned to tournament headquarters. Rolls iinished third in the singles championship, but fourth place will be fought cut between J. R. Smith, C. Spearman, and W. Whittaker today. Deare was New Zealand rinks winner as a representative of the Dunedin club at Auckland in 1931. For the same club he was runner-up in the New Zealand rinks at Christchurch in 1932, and as a Carlton representative to Franks of Balmoral at Auckland last year. In 1934 Deare was also runner-up iu the New Zealand rinks at Dunedin to H. Wilson, of Linwood, and in 1932 and 1934 he got to the semifinal of the Dominion pairs. In 1938 Deare won the champion singles of the Jit. Eden club, and in 1939 won the champion singles of the Carlton club. He also won the Taurnnga rinks for Carlton last year. In the morning Squire put C. Spearman, Sydenham, out of the singles in a rather one-sided game, which revealed the southerner as having lost the brilliant touch he had shown throughout the preliminaries of the singles, pairs, and fours. Deare maintained his two lives by scoring an easy win over-H. Roils, Featherston. However, in the semifinal Deare. who had only to beat Squire to take the title with an unbeaten record, found the Taranaki player too steady, and be went down 11-20.

Spearman met his second semi-final defeat* of the day when he went down 21-19 to J. B. Lawrie, Island Bay, in the quarter-finals of the pairs championship. Excellent progress was made with the pairs championship, the quarter-final series being completed during the afternoon. It is anticipated that the semifinals and final of this championship will be completed today. Three Wellington and one Auckland pair will contest the lust rounds of the pairs championship. They are Lawrie (Island Bay), McWhnnnell (Hhtaitni). and Cullen (Thorndon), and Bremner (West End, Auckland). Livingstone Unbeaten. In the fours championship the quarterfinal stages have been reached, and the final may be played this afternoon. The Onehuuga four, skipped by F. Livingstone, is the only two-life team left in the final, the remaining four being one-lifers. Livingstone's form has been consistently good ever since he lost his first two games, of the preliminary section play. Since then he has z won twelve games on end. The contestants for final honours are well distributed with two fours from Auckland province. Livingstone and Bell, one from Taranaki, I’uvitt, and one from Wellington, Hazelwood.
